Der Monte Fitz Roy (3375 m) erhielt seinen Namen zu Ehren des Kapitäns der Beagle. Unter dessen Führung 1834 nach einer sechzehntägigen Bootsfahrt auf dem Río Santa Cruz, an der auch Charles Darwin teilnahm, dieser Gipfel erstmalig gesichtet wurde. Etwa 1600 Meter über die allgemeine Gipfelflur seiner Umgebung aufragend, gleicht er einem Bündel von Pfeilern und Nadeln, deren senkrechte Wände tausend Meter tiefe Klüfte trennen. Mit Recht bezeichnet man den Fitz Roy als den schönsten Andengipfel überhaupt. - 1973
