The Spice Route: The Moluccas

The Moluccas are an Indonesian archipelago historically known as the world-famous ‘Spice Islands’. The archipelago lies to the east of Indonesia, nestled between Sulawesi to the west and New Guinea to the east. The region is volcanic, extremely lush and boasts spectacular coral reefs and diving sites.

The islands were once the world’s main centre for the cultivation of valuable spices such as nutmeg and cloves. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch fought bloody battles for supremacy and the wealth of the spice trade.

All photographs were taken in 1990.
