Two women in the traditional dress of the Cusco region. The textiles are characterised by their craftsmanship and symbolism. The women are wearing colourful, patterned woven shawls draped over their shoulders. These traditional shawls are used in everyday life both to protect against the cold and to carry objects or babies. The typical, loose-fitting skirts, usually dark in colour or with colourful trim, are characteristic of the Andean region. The woman on the left is wearing a light-coloured felt hat decorated with coloured ribbons. In Peru, the shape and colour of such hats often reveal the exact region of origin or village community of the person wearing them. – 1976
