Description
This famous boulder is situated in the municipality of Aipe in the department of Huila, Colombia. It is known locally as the ‘Piedra Pintada’ (Painted Stone). The engravings, carved deep into the rock, were created hundreds of years ago by the pre-Columbian indigenous peoples of the region – presumably from the Pijao and Paez (Nasa) groups. Historians believe that this massive volcanic rock served as an important trading and meeting place for the exchange of goods (such as salt, gold and crops) between the tribes of the lowlands and the highlands. – Colombia – 1977
