The Eyüp Mosque in Istanbul, Islam’s third holiest city after Mecca and Jerusalem. This magnificent building on the Golden Horn was constructed in 1458 over the supposed tomb of Eyüp Ansari, the standard-bearer of Muhammad, who fell during the first siege of Constantinople by the Muslims in 669 and was buried on the battlefield. The small columned pavilion in the foreground shelters the fountain used for ritual ablutions. – 1989
