Description
A young girl from Lathi balances a large, gleaming golden metal vessel (traditionally known as a lota or ghada) on her head. Carrying loads on the head is a centuries-old practice. A small, ring-shaped cloth pad (chumli or indhoni) is often placed between the head and the vessel to distribute the pressure and make it easier to balance. In many rural areas without running water, fetching water is a daily task, often involving a walk of several kilometres, which is frequently carried out by women and children. – 1990
