Women from the desert region around Lathi and Jaisalmer are known for these colourful traditional costumes, which stand in stark contrast to the barren, sandy desert landscape. This woman is carrying a small child in her arms and is dressed in a patterned tunic (often called a kurti), combined with a striking, usually red headscarf (odhni or dupatta), which is artfully draped over her head and shoulders. Typical of this region are the heavy, multi-layered necklaces with beads and silver pendants, as well as the wide bangles, which are often made from imitation ivory, bone or plastic and cover almost the entire forearm. – Lathi – 1990
