Description
The Meghwal are known as a community of carpet weavers and produce handmade items from camel, goat and sheep’s wool. The division of labour is traditionally defined, with women combing, cleaning and spinning the wool, whilst the men usually weave it into carpets or traditional fabrics. The hand-spun wool is used to create high-quality carpets, blankets and shawls featuring traditional patterns. The device shown in the picture is a classic Indian charkha. The technique of spinning whilst seated on the floor has remained virtually unchanged for centuries. – Khuri – 1990
