Portal of one of the two Dutch fortresses in Matara, the port city next to the southern tip of the island of Sri Lanka. The emblem of the Dutch East India Company crowns the gable of this gate, built in 1703, of the Redoute van Eck. Matara was a well-known port for Arab sailors before it was taken over by the Dutch and developed into an important base on the spice route. - 1990
