Description
The Sri Mariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore and an important national monument. It was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai and is located in the heart of Chinatown. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, who is revered in popular belief as the bringer of rain and healer of diseases. The most striking part of the temple is the five-storey entrance tower (gopuram), which is decorated with colourful sculptures of gods, mythological creatures and animals. – Singapore – 1990
