Description
Candi Kalasan (also known as Kalibening Temple) is the oldest Buddhist temple in the Yogyakarta region of Java, Indonesia. It was completed in 778 AD and was originally dedicated to the Buddhist goddess Tara. The building is characterised by an octagonal roof decorated with reliefs of the Tathagatas (Buddha figures) facing the four cardinal directions. A special feature is that the walls are covered with Vajralepa, a white protective resin that has preserved the fine carvings. - The temple is located about 13 km east of Yogyakarta. 1990
