Henri-Jean Hugot (1916-20 - 14) was an outstanding Sahara specialist. After studying ethnology and palaeontology, he headed the department of Saharan prehistory at the Bardo Museum in Algiers for two years. From 1963 to 1969, he taught African prehistory at the Institut d'Afrique Noire in Dakar. In 1970 - , he was appointed vice-director of the Muséum d'Histoire naturelle in Paris.
Throughout his life, Henri-Jean Hugot led numerous expeditions to the Maghreb and the Sahel and devoted his research to prehistoric civilisation. He published more than a hundred works, most of them with a scientific background, and thus made an important contribution to our understanding of this fascinating region.
