Description

  • Foto Number: ZAM-290

The clock tower in Belize City or British Honduras was built in 1924. The English language sign is there to remind us of the presence of Great Britain, although the majority of the inhabitants are mostly people of colour: Mayan Indians, Mestizos, West Indian Blacks, Mulattoes, Syrians, Lebanese and Chinese. All these people speak a language in which Spanish, English and French words are recognisable. British Honduras is a small country that is not much talked about, at least in the Western world. However. For years, Guatemala has been claiming possession of it, accusing Britain of not having kept its promises. In exchange for the occupation of the territory, Great Britain had promised to build a communication route that would have allowed Guatemala to sell part of its exports to the Caribbean coast. Unfortunately, this promise was never fulfilled and unease set in. - 1978
