Der peruanische Ort Cerro de Pasco auf 4350 Meter ist mit seinen heute 30 000 Einwohnern seit der Kolonialzeit ein wichtiger Bergbauort. Gold, Silber, Kupfer und Zink werden zum Teil in Minen abgebaut, die 5000 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel liegen. Die Kohle kommt jedoch aus dem tiefeingekerbten Canón von Goyallarisquisga, trotzdem das höchstgelegene Kohlenbergwerk der Erde. - 1969
